Emergency Information

The way that you access urgent medical care depends on the type of problem you are having.

Life-threatening emergencies including severe chest pains, severe breathing difficulties and suspected stroke
Phone 999 or go to A&E
The nearest emergency departments for adults and children are at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Severe medical problems which you think might need A&E but it's not life-threatening
Phone 111

Minor injuries including suspected broken bones, cuts and burns
Phone 111 to request an urgent appointment at the minor injuries unit.
The nearest minor injuries unit is at the Western General Hospital.

Minor illness including acute cough, sore throat, earache, simple skin infections, cystitis in women
Access "Pharmacy First" by visiting your local pharmacy

Urgent medical problems
Phone the surgery between 8am-9am if it can wait until then.
If it can't wait, phone the surgery if it is open. If the surgery is closed, phone 111.

Contact your local NHS optometrist. If it can't wait until they are open, phone 111.
