Local Health Services

Healthcare is provided by the team at the surgery, by other professionals working in the community and by the staff at the local hospitals and clinics.

Contacting the right team of professionals will help you get the care or advice which you need. This page gives you details of healthcare which is accessed via other parts of the healthcare system.

Addictions

NHS support with smoking cesssation: contact NHS Lothian Quit Your Way (North Edinburgh) on 0131 286 5113.

NHS support with drugs or alcohol addiction: contact the Edinburgh Drug and Alcohol Service at the North-East Recovery Hub, 5 Links Place, Leith (0131 554 7516 option 1). Click here for drop-in times.

Bladder and pelvic floor problems

The continence and pelvic health physiotherapy service can help with female urinary and pelvic floor problems and can be accessed by self-referral.

Community nursing (district nurses)

The district nursing team arranges nursing care, advice and support to patients requiring this at home. They work closely with the GP team. They are based at Leith Community Treatment Centre and are contacted directly on 0131 536 6206 Monday to Friday 08.30 to 16:30 (answer machine available).

Community Treatment and Care Services (CTACS)

The Edinburgh CTACS are nursing clinics based within NHS hubs around the city, including at Leith Community Treatment Centre.

Dentistry - tooth and mouth problems

Your NHS dentist assesses your mouth and teeth by way of routine check-ups and if you develop problems. Emergency dental care is also provided by NHS Lothian for patients not registered with a dentist. GPs do not assess dental problems and do not prescribe medication for dental problems.

Health visitors

The health visiting team provide health surveillance, general support and advice on health matters for parents and guardians of babies and pre-school children. The team can be contacted on 0131 454 2302 Monday to Friday 0800 to 1600 (answer machine available).

Minor injuries units

Minor injuries is for adults and children over 12 months of age with

when the injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

The closest minor injuries units are at the Western General Hospital and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. You can book an urgent minor injuries unit appointment by phoning NH24 on 111.

Optometry - eye problems

Your local NHS optometrist is the professional who assesses eye problems. You can search for your nearest opticians on NHS inform. If you have an eye problem out-of-hours and it can't wait for the opticians to open, phone NHS24 on 111. You can also find out more about eyecare in Scotland at www.eyes.scot.

Podiatry - foot problems

The NHS Lothian Podiatry Service assesses foot problems and can be accessed by downloading the self-referral form from their website.

Physiotherapy self-referral

You can download an "MSK self-referral form" on the Edinburgh Community Physiotherapy Service website.

Under 18s: Physiotherapy and occupational therapy services for children and young people under 18 can be accessed by self-referral by contacting the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People on 0131 312 1079.

Social care (home care)

Assessments for social care and social support are done by the City of Edinburgh Council Social Care department. Their contact line is called Social Care Direct - 0131 200 2324 or socialcaredirect@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Travel clinics

Clinics for travel immunisations and travel medications are offered by private providers, some pharmacies and by NHS Lothian travel clinics (where some services are chargeable).

Vaccines (immunisations)

All immunisations and vaccinations are now delivered by the NHS Lothian health board rather than the GP surgery.

Some immunisations for babies and pre-school children are delivered in the surgery and if you need to contact the childhood immunisations team you can phone them on 0131 454 2301 or 2300.

Walking aids and wheelchairs

If you require assessment for a new walking aid, please complete the walking aids referral form on the physiotherapy service website.

For broken and faulty walking aids issued by Edinburgh Community Equipment Stores in the last 18 months please phone them on 0131 529 6300.

Wheelchair assessments are done by the SMART centre. Existing users of the clinic can contact them directly but new users require a referral from one of their key healthcare professionals, for example their physiotherapist, OT, hospital consultant or GP.
